On canvas, 36 x 36 inches
About this oil:
This was a very enjoyable piece to do and it’s a follow up to the larger, 36 x 60 oil, Cadmium Running Through.
Typically, the smaller works come first but in this case, I set out to do a more a more colorful version in a more restrictive space.
Everything here is set up to push the colors further. The combinations are subtle but the brushstrokes and patterns create interesting hill and meadow patterns.
That was the plan until I decided to make the scene even more dramatic. I had sketched in the bottom line of trees with unusual colors but realized this oil could go much further, so the dark purples and blues went in. Over those darks, the brighter, almost rainbow-like colors really jumped out.
Well, that quickly changed everything!
To keep up with the brighter trend going on, additional colors were added to the rest of the painting, adding vibrancy and more interest. Eventually, the balance felt right—a work that invites curiosity, contemplation, and conversation - a fine art object.
