About this oil:
I was drawn to the idea of a sunset over water, and I had a photo reference image that offered rich cloud patterns to work with. From the beginning, I didn’t aim for a literal description, freeing to take the idea of a sunset into a new place, allowing the patterns and chroma to lead the way.
 
This work began as a class demonstration, with an emphasis on making a strong start and inviting a broader range of color than usual. Beginning a landscape like this often leads to unexpected and memorable results.
 
When I returned to the canvas a week later, the surface had dried, allowing me to expressively add even more color and variation. In the end, I learned from my own demonstration and I’m very happy with the result.
