About this oil:
I was very interested in the idea of doing the sky, sea and land as pure compositional forms. Everything has a place here without one area overpowering the other. Also, the detail is pulled back but just enough remains to give a sense of space and distance, otherwise it would come off like collaged cutouts.
It is realist? Not very much. It is convincing as abstracted forms, my original intention? Yes, the bands of color combine to present a compelling scene with minimal information.
Color became a big factor in this work. The pink clouds were insisted on and that set up a cascade of responses to the dominating pinks in the sky. By a cascade, it means that a number of colors and shapes were tried before this piece finally came together.
There is a glowing effect throughout much this painting, and when combined with various edge effects, it came to life at last and a soft breeze began to blow.
