Grateful Notices: Colors Running Uphill, oil on panel, 24 x 24 inches

Updated: Jan 4, 2023

Private collection

About this oil: For artists, and in particular those focused on color as I am, the holiday season begins with the arrival of the autumn colors. Coincidentally, it is also the time when a great many artists temporarily become bad drivers, since we are distracted by the landscapes and not as focused on the road, so do watch out for us!

Painting under the influence, I was drawn to this composition and the possibilities of bright color and those deep, dark passages. Since nature is presenting colors without abandon, I followed along, using new colors of my own.

Thinking about driving again, if this oil was a car, I would get pulled over for speeding. Yes, I set out to do a bright, fall rendition but as I was laying in the color against the darks, the entire painting gained unexpected intensity. I was glad to have that meadow and a bit of sky to provide a soft border to the color riot.

That was great fun and I’m looking forward to more autumn inspirations.
