About this oil:
This was a very enjoyable oil to do. The large, 5 x 4 foot size creates a few challenges, but that was one of the things that attracted me to the idea. The other was to make a statement in a large scale, that is to create a lot of pattern, color and movement over a large surface.
There is movement in every part of the canvas and I get to say it took considerable moving around to make it happen! To start it off, an almost completed start was loosely blocked in and then it remained in the studio for about a year while other projects took priority, but it gave me ample time to consider what to do with it next.
During that time, I found that stepping away from it helped me see new possibilities I hadn’t noticed at first—the way certain colors could echo each other, or how a slight shift in rhythm could tie the composition together. In a sense, the painting had time to breathe, and when I returned to it, it seemed ready to move forward with me.
