About this image:
I made this pastel for a show in Santa Fe, NM. The gallery wanted a small work so I set out to do a small pattern of tree tops without any design reference. The layout was done casually, sketching in the angle of the land and then the tree tops in a medium - dark blue.
 
The trunks were quickly indicated and it was then I realized that something would be needed in the background. I used an aqua for the background trees and immediatelly I was struck by the simple power of this design.
 
Following the blues, the pastel took shape and I was very attentive to making all of the colors glow. When the foreground went in, the glow had to continue in the greens.
 
Although the piece was small, it was taking on very serious attributes. I stepped away and came back to it later with fresh eyes, increasing the delicacy and power. It was very satisifying piece to work on.
