About this oil:
Sunsets have always intrigued me. They offer such a wide range of colors, everything from soft and poetic to fully saturated. I usually lean toward the softer end myself, but this composition let me play with both, which is exactly what made it irresistible to me
.
I started with the cloud bands, and they went in quickly, enough that I thought this painting might come together faster than most. But then a kind of conversation broke out between all those colored ribbons, each one jostling to stand out. That's usually the moment a painting starts to get overworked and lose its way, so I slowed down, leaving long stretches between painting sessions and spending more time thinking than painting.
 
Bit by bit, new shapes and color combinations emerged, each one playing off the others in ways I hadn't planned. The clouds at the top meanwhile, stayed out of the conversation entirely, mostly keeping to how they were originally painted. They remained aloof, quiet, and exactly the counterpoint the rest of the piece needed.
